Pentair IntelliFlo XF Over Current Alarm

The over current alarm on the Pentair IntelliFlo XF indicates that the drive is overloaded or that the motor has an electrical problem. The drive will restart automatically 20 seconds after the over current condition clears.

How the Over Current Alarm Works

An over current condition means the drive is drawing more current than it can safely handle. This can result from a mechanical load on the motor that exceeds its rating, or from an electrical fault in the motor windings. When this condition is detected, the pump stops to protect the drive and motor. Once the condition clears, the drive will restart 20 seconds later.

All control panel buttons are disabled until the alarm is acknowledged with the Reset button.

Possible Causes

Drive Overload

The drive may be overloaded when the pump is being asked to move water against excessive resistance, or when a mechanical component is restricting impeller rotation.

Motor Electrical Problem

An electrical fault in the motor — such as a winding failure, short circuit, or insulation breakdown — can cause the drive to register an over current condition even if the hydraulic load is normal.

Corrective Actions from the Manual

Check Voltage

  • Check voltage at motor terminals and at the panel while the pump is running
  • If low, see wiring instructions or consult the power company
  • Check line voltage: if less than 90% or more than 110% of rated voltage, consult a licensed electrician

Check Wiring Connections

  • Check for loose connections at motor terminals and the circuit panel
  • Tighten any loose wiring connections

Check Motor Temperature

  • Turn power to the motor off
  • Check for proper voltage supplied to the motor
  • Check for a proper impeller or impeller rubbing against the volute

Automatic Restart

The drive will restart 20 seconds after the over current condition clears. If the condition recurs immediately after restart, address the underlying cause before attempting additional restarts to avoid repeated stress on the drive and motor.
