Pentair Max-E-Therm ERR IGN Error
The ERR IGN error on a Pentair Max-E-Therm indicates the ignition control module was unable to ignite the heater. The heater attempted to light but failed.
Press HEATER OFF button to clear this error.
What Causes ERR IGN?
Ignition failure can occur when the heater cannot establish or verify flame during the ignition sequence.
Common Causes
- No gas supply: Gas valve closed or empty tank
- Dirty igniter: Carbon buildup on igniter
- Weak spark: Worn igniter or weak ignition module
- Flame sensor dirty: Cannot detect flame
- Gas pressure low: Insufficient pressure for ignition
- Air in gas line: After service or new installation
- Ignition module failure: Module not functioning
Troubleshooting Steps
Step 1: Verify Gas Supply
- Check gas meter or tank gauge
- Verify main gas valve is ON
- Check heater gas valve is ON
- Confirm gas flows to other appliances (if applicable)
Step 2: Check for Spark
- Try to ignite heater
- Look through viewing window for spark
- Listen for clicking sound of igniter
- If no spark, check igniter and wiring
Step 3: Inspect Igniter
- Turn off power and gas to heater
- Remove burner access panel
- Inspect igniter electrode
- Clean carbon deposits with fine sandpaper
- Check igniter gap (typically 1/8")
Step 4: Clean Flame Sensor
- Locate flame sensor (near igniter)
- Remove sensor carefully
- Clean with fine steel wool or sandpaper
- Reinstall sensor
Step 5: Purge Air from Gas Line
After service or new installation:
- Air may be trapped in gas line
- Attempt ignition 3-4 times
- Each attempt purges more air
- Heater should eventually ignite
Gas Pressure Check
Requires qualified technician:
- Check inlet gas pressure
- Verify manifold pressure
- Adjust regulator if needed
- Check orifice sizes match gas type
When to Call for Service
- No spark despite cleaning igniter
- Gas pressure adjustment needed
- Ignition module replacement
- Gas valve issues
