Pentair IntelliBrite 5G Troubleshooting Guide

The Pentair IntelliBrite 5G is an LED pool and spa light that offers both white and color models. Color lights are controlled by cycling the wall switch a specific number of times to select from seven light shows and five fixed colors. When a light fails to illuminate or respond, there are specific steps to diagnose and fix the issue.

This guide covers IntelliBrite 5G troubleshooting, color mode selection (wall switch cycling), Hold and Recall, and electrical requirements, based on the official Pentair IntelliBrite 5G Installation and User's Guide.

Pentair IntelliBrite 5G Troubleshooting Guide

IntelliBrite 5G Overview

The Pentair IntelliBrite 5G is an LED underwater pool and spa light available in white and color versions. The color model offers seven pre-programmed light shows and five fixed colors, all selectable by cycling the wall switch a specific number of times. The lights run on either 12 VAC (via a step-down transformer) or 120 VAC (direct line voltage with GFCI).

IntelliBrite 5G lights can be controlled by a standard wall switch, the IntelliBrite Color Light Controller (P/N 600054, sold separately), or automatically through Pentair IntelliTouch®, EasyTouch®, and SunTouch® control systems.

Important: The IntelliBrite 5G LED light cannot be used on a dimmer circuit. Using a dimmer switch will cause permanent damage to the light.

Troubleshooting

ProblemCause / Action
Light does not function properly Check the light wiring connections at the junction box and at the AC power switch. Verify that proper AC power is being supplied to the light.
Light will not illuminate (120 V lights) Check the GFCI ground fault circuit interrupter and reset it if necessary. A tripped GFCI is the most common cause of sudden light failure on 120 VAC circuits.
Light will not illuminate (12 V lights with fuse assembly) Replace the fuse harness assembly (P/N 620276). Note: Replacing the fuse may not fully resolve the problem — in some cases the fuse blows because the circuit board has failed. If the light still does not work after fuse replacement, the circuit board must also be replaced.

Selecting Color Modes (Wall Switch Method)

On the color IntelliBrite 5G, light show modes and fixed colors are selected by cycling the wall switch off and on a specific number of times. When power is first applied, a brief white light illuminates, followed by the previously saved color. To change modes:

  1. Switch the light on
  2. Turn the switch off and on the number of times shown below for the desired mode
  3. During the switching process, the light will briefly go dark between cycles — this is normal
Warning: During the off/on switching process the pool and spa will be briefly dark. Take precautions to prevent unforeseen accidents to pool users during this period.

Saving a Color Mode

When power is switched off, the last active color show mode or fixed color is automatically saved. The next time the light is powered on, the previously saved mode will resume. For example: while in Party Mode, switch the light off. Wait more than 10 seconds, then switch back on — Party Mode resumes. If power was off for more than five seconds, the last saved mode is displayed.

Using the IntelliBrite Color Light Controller

The IntelliBrite Controller (P/N 600054, sold separately) lets you synchronize and switch multiple IntelliBrite 5G color lights simultaneously. Rotate the dial to point to the desired color show or fixed color. The Controller also has dedicated Hold and Recall buttons:

  • Hold: Press to capture and save the current color effect while a light show is running (LED lights up when active)
  • Recall: Press to activate the last saved color effect (LED lights up when active)

Electrical Requirements

VoltageGFCI Required (USA)GFCI Required (Canada)
12 VACNoYes
120 VACYesYes

12 VAC lights require an external 120 VAC to 12 VAC step-down transformer. When using a 300W transformer for multiple 12V lights, use no more than three pool lights and one spa light on a single transformer. Do not exceed 100 ft (30.5 m) of total cable run between the transformer and lights. For longer cable runs, set the transformer output to 14 VAC.

The junction box or transformer must be located at least 8 inches (20.3 cm) above the maximum water line, at least 4 inches (10.2 cm) above the pool deck, and at least 4 ft (1.22 m) from the inside wall of the pool.

The top edge of the light lens must be at least 18 inches (45.7 cm) below the water surface. The face ring pilot screw must be in the 12 o'clock position.
