Pentair IntelliCenter Sensor Errors
IntelliCenter uses temperature sensors to monitor air, water, and solar conditions. When a sensor fails or becomes disconnected, the system displays an error in the Diagnostics menu.
Sensor errors affect heating operation and should be resolved promptly.
Understanding Sensor Errors
IntelliCenter connects to temperature sensors through the J21 connector on the motherboard. Each sensor type provides critical data for system operation.
Sensor Types
- Air Sensor: Monitors ambient air temperature for freeze protection
- Water Sensor: Monitors pool/spa water temperature for heating control
- Solar Sensor: Monitors solar panel temperature for solar heating
Error Messages
Air Err / Air Temperature Err
The air temperature sensor is not connected or is defective.
- Display location: Main Screen shows "Air Err"; Diagnostics menu shows "Air Temperature Err"
- Impact: Freeze protection may not function correctly
Water Temperature Err
The water temperature sensor is not connected or is defective.
- Display location: Diagnostics menu
- Impact: Heater control may not function; temperature display will be incorrect
Solar Temperature Err
The solar temperature sensor is not connected or is defective (if solar heating is configured).
- Display location: Diagnostics menu
- Impact: Solar heating automation will not function
Sensor Open/Short Alarms
When connected to heaters, IntelliCenter may display:
- Water Sensor Open Alarm: Sensor circuit is open (disconnected or broken wire)
- Water Sensor Short Alarm: Sensor circuit is shorted
- Defrost Temp Sensor Open/Short: Heat pump defrost sensor issue
Troubleshooting Steps
Step 1: Access Diagnostics
- On IntelliCenter, go to Settings
- Select Diagnostics
- Note which sensors show errors
Step 2: Check Sensor Connections
- Turn off power to IntelliCenter
- Open the load center
- Locate the J21 connector on the motherboard
- Verify sensor plug is fully inserted
- Check for corrosion on connector pins
Step 3: Inspect Sensor Wire
- Trace the sensor wire from J21 to the sensor location
- Look for damage, cuts, or pinched areas
- Check connections at any junction boxes
- Verify sensor probe is intact
Step 4: Test Sensor Resistance
Using a multimeter on resistance (ohms) setting:
- Disconnect sensor from J21
- Measure resistance across sensor leads
- At 77F (25C), typical resistance is approximately 10k ohms
- Resistance should change smoothly with temperature
- Open circuit (infinite resistance) indicates broken sensor or wire
- Near zero resistance indicates short
Sensor Locations
- Air sensor: Usually mounted on exterior of equipment pad or load center
- Water sensor: Installed in a sensor well in the plumbing, after filter
- Solar sensor: Mounted on or near solar panels
Replacement
If testing confirms a failed sensor:
- Order correct replacement sensor (Pentair part numbers vary by sensor type)
- Install in same location as original
- Route wire away from high-voltage cables
- Use weatherproof connections outdoors
When to Call for Service
- Sensor and wiring test good but error persists
- J21 connector on motherboard appears damaged
- Multiple sensors failing simultaneously
