Pentair IntelliChlor: CELL Light Not On
Quick Summary
- The CELL light indicates when the IntelliChlor is actively producing chlorine.
- If the CELL light is off, no chlorine is being generated.
- Common causes: output set to 0%, salt too low, insufficient water flow, or no power.
- Check the Sanitizer Output setting first - it may have been turned down accidentally.
- Verify salt levels are above 2600 ppm and water is flowing properly through the cell.
What the CELL Light Indicates
The CELL light on the IntelliChlor control panel shows when the electrolytic cell is actively generating chlorine. A solid green light means chlorine production is occurring. When this light is off, the cell is not producing any chlorine.
Common Causes
Sanitizer Output Set to 0%
The most common reason is the output percentage being set to zero. Check the Sanitizer Output LED indicators - if no lights are on, press the MORE button to increase output. The system may have been turned down during maintenance or winterization and not reset.
Salt Level Too Low
If the salt level drops below 2600 ppm, the IntelliChlor shuts off chlorine production to protect the cell. Check if the red LOW SALT light is on. If so, add salt per the manufacturer's guidelines.
Insufficient Water Flow
The IntelliChlor has a flow sensor that prevents operation when water flow is inadequate. This protects against gas buildup. Check if the FLOW light is red, indicating a flow problem.
Water Temperature Too Cold
If pool water temperature is below 50°F (10°C), the IntelliChlor will not produce chlorine. The COLD light will be illuminated. This is normal for winterized pools.
No Power to the System
If no lights are on at all, the unit has no power. Check that the pump is running (IntelliChlor only receives power when the pump is on), verify the time clock is active, and check fuses in the Power Center.
Troubleshooting Steps
- Check output setting: Press MORE button to increase Sanitizer Output if at 0%
- Verify salt level: Test salt independently and check the salt level LEDs
- Confirm water flow: Make sure pump is running and FLOW light is green
- Check water temperature: Wait for warmer conditions if COLD light is on
- Verify power: Confirm pump is running and time clock is active
- Inspect cell: Remove and check for debris or calcium buildup
When to Call a Professional
If you've verified proper settings, adequate salt, good flow, and the unit has power but still no CELL light, there may be a deeper electrical issue with the cell or Power Center. A qualified pool technician can test the cell output voltage and diagnose component failures.
