Pentair IntelliChlor: No Power (No Lights)
Quick Summary
- If no lights are on at all, the IntelliChlor is not receiving power.
- The IntelliChlor is designed to only receive power when the pump is running.
- Check that the pump is on and the time clock (if used) is in an active period.
- A blown fuse in the Power Center is a common cause - check and replace if needed.
- Verify wiring connections in the Power Center match the installation diagram.
Understanding IntelliChlor Power
The Pentair IntelliChlor Power Center (for IC20, IC40, IC60 models) or Power Supply (for IC15 models) must be wired to receive power only when the pool pump is running. This is a safety requirement - the IntelliChlor should never be energized when water is not flowing through the cell.
If your IntelliChlor has no lights on at all, it means the unit is not receiving AC power.
Common Causes
Pump is Not Running
The most common reason for no power is simply that the pump is off. The IntelliChlor is wired to the load side of the pump timer or relay, so it only receives power when the pump circuit is energized.
Time Clock in Off Period
If you use a time clock to control the pump, verify it's currently in an "on" period. Check the clock's position and programming.
Blown Fuse in Power Center
The IC20/IC40/IC60 Power Center contains fuses that can blow due to power surges or electrical issues. Open the Power Center and check the fuse(s).
Wiring Issues
Loose, corroded, or incorrectly wired connections in the Power Center can prevent power delivery. This may occur after installation, maintenance, or due to environmental factors.
Tripped Breaker or GFCI
Check the circuit breaker that supplies power to the pump circuit. Also check any GFCI protection on the circuit.
Troubleshooting Steps
- Verify pump is running: Look at the pump - is it on and circulating water?
- Check time clock: If used, ensure the time clock is in an "on" period and set to current time
- Check circuit breaker: Verify the breaker for the pool pump circuit is on
- Check GFCI: Reset any GFCI protection if tripped
- Inspect Power Center fuse: Open the Power Center and check for blown fuse(s)
- Verify wiring: With power OFF, check that all connections are tight and correctly positioned per the wiring diagram on the inside of the Power Center cover
Checking and Replacing the Fuse
For the IC20/IC40/IC60 Power Center:
- Turn off power to the system at the breaker
- Open the Power Center enclosure
- Locate the fuse(s) - refer to the diagram inside the cover
- Remove and inspect the fuse - look for a broken filament or discoloration
- Replace with the same type and rating fuse if blown
- Restore power and check operation
Warning: If fuses blow repeatedly, there is an underlying electrical problem that needs professional diagnosis. Do not simply keep replacing fuses.
When to Call an Electrician
Contact a qualified electrician or pool technician if:
- Fuses blow repeatedly after replacement
- You're not comfortable working with electrical connections
- Wiring appears damaged, corroded, or incorrect
- The system still has no power after all troubleshooting steps
