Pentair IntelliFlo VSF Pressure Limit Warning

The pressure limit warning on the Pentair IntelliFlo VSF is a warning condition — not an alarm. The yellow warning light illuminates and the pump continues to run. No Reset button press is required.

What This Warning Means

The pump has detected that it has met the maximum system pressure set in the Min/Max menu. The pump will continue to run, but it is not achieving the desired flow rate or speed because of the pressure limit. When this warning is active, the limit warning is also displayed on the bottom of the drive's keypad screen, indicating which limit the drive is running into.

The pressure measured is the total system head — the product of suction pressure and discharge pressure. This is equivalent to Total Dynamic Head (TDH). This value may not correspond with the filter's local pressure gauge reading because it is the TDH across the pump, not the local pressure of the filter.

When the Pressure Limit Is Active

The pressure limit feature works differently depending on the program type:

  • Flow programs (constant flow mode): The pressure limit is active by default. The pump will always monitor and enforce the Max Pressure setting when running a flow-type program.
  • Speed programs (constant speed mode): The pressure limit is disabled by default. To enable pressure monitoring while running a constant speed program, the "Pressure Limit Speed" setting must be manually enabled in the Min/Max menu.

How to Enable Pressure Limit for Speed Programs

Navigate to Menu → Settings → Min/Max → Press Limit (Speed). Change the setting from Disabled to Enabled and press Save. When enabled, the drive will monitor system pressure while running at a constant speed and will limit the output if pressure reaches the Max Pressure setting.

How to Adjust the Pressure Limit

Setting Default Range
Max Pressure 30 PSI 1–50 PSI
Pressure Limit Speed Disabled Enabled / Disabled

Set Maximum System Pressure

  1. Check that the green power LED is on.
  2. Press Menu.
  3. Press Select to select "Settings".
  4. Use the Up or Down arrows to scroll to "Min/Max". Press Select.
  5. Use the Up or Down arrows to scroll to "Set Maximum Pressure". Press Select.
  6. Use the Up or Down arrows to edit the maximum pressure setting from 1 to 50 PSI.
  7. Press Save to save. Press Back to exit.

Enable Pressure Limit for Speed Programs

  1. Check that the green power LED is on.
  2. Press Menu.
  3. Press Select to select "Settings".
  4. Use the Up or Down arrows to scroll to "Min/Max" and press Select.
  5. Use the Up or Down arrows to scroll to "Press Limit (Speed)". Press Select.
  6. Use the Up or Down arrows to change the setting from "Disabled" to "Enabled".
  7. Press Save to save. Press Back to exit.

Understanding the Pressure Limit

The maximum pressure setting gives the user a way to limit the pump's output that is different from a maximum speed limit. If the system becomes less restrictive, the pump is still capable of higher flow rates than it would have been if a speed limit were used, but the pressure is still limited where needed. The pump will continue to run at the pressure limit and the warning light will illuminate while in this state.
