Pentair IntelliFlo Overheat Alarm
The overheat alarm on a Pentair IntelliFlo VSF indicates the drive temperature has exceeded 54.4C (130F). When this occurs, the pump automatically reduces speed to protect the drive electronics.
This is a protective feature that prevents permanent damage to the variable speed drive.
What Triggers Overheat?
Environmental Factors
- Poor ventilation: Equipment pad enclosed without airflow
- Direct sunlight: Pump exposed to prolonged sun
- High ambient temperature: Equipment in non-ventilated enclosure
- Nearby heat sources: Heater exhaust, air conditioner condensers
Electrical Issues
- Loose wiring connections creating resistance
- Undersized wire gauge for run length
- Low voltage causing higher amperage draw
- Corroded connections
Mechanical Issues
- Debris in impeller causing extra load
- Worn bearings creating friction
- Clogged filter increasing system pressure
- Running at max speed continuously
Troubleshooting Steps
Step 1: Improve Ventilation
- Ensure equipment enclosure has adequate airflow
- Remove any obstructions around the motor
- Consider adding ventilation to equipment room
- If pump is in direct sun, consider shade structure
Step 2: Check Electrical Connections
- Turn off power at breaker
- Open drive cover
- Inspect all wire connections for tightness
- Look for signs of heat damage (discoloration, melting)
- Check for corrosion on terminals
- Tighten any loose connections
Step 3: Verify Voltage
With pump running, measure voltage at motor terminals:
- Should be within 10% of 230V
- Low voltage causes higher amperage and heat
- If voltage is low, consult licensed electrician
Step 4: Reduce Load
- Clean filter to reduce system pressure
- Check impeller for debris
- Consider reducing run speed if possible
Thermal Mode Feature
The IntelliFlo has a built-in Thermal Mode for freeze protection:
- Default setting: Enabled
- Activates when drive temperature drops below 40F (4.4C)
- Runs pump at preset speed to prevent freezing
- Disabled when connected to automation system freeze protect
When to Call for Service
Contact Pentair Technical Service (1-800-831-7133) if:
