Pentair IntelliFlo VSF Troubleshooting Guide

The Pentair IntelliFlo VSF is one of the most popular variable speed pumps in the pool industry, known for its energy efficiency and programmable features. Like any sophisticated equipment, it can display error codes and warnings that require attention.

This comprehensive guide covers all IntelliFlo VSF alarms and warnings, helping pool service professionals quickly diagnose and resolve issues in the field.

Pentair IntelliFlo VSF Troubleshooting Guide

Understanding IntelliFlo Display Messages

The IntelliFlo VSF uses two types of display messages:

  • Alarms (Red Light): The alarm light illuminates and all control panel buttons are disabled until the alarm is cleared. Press the Reset button after resolving the fault condition.
  • Warnings (Yellow Light): The warning light illuminates but the pump continues to run. Adjust the speed, flow, or pressure limit causing the warning to resolve.

IntelliFlo Alarm Codes

Power Out/OFF

The incoming supply voltage is less than required. The drive faults to protect itself from over current. The drive contains capacitors that keep it powered up long enough to save current run parameters.

Solution: Check voltage at motor terminals and at panel while pump is running. If low, consult a licensed electrician.

Priming Failure

If the pump is not primed within the "Max Priming Duration" it stops and generates a "Priming Alarm" for 10 minutes, then attempts to prime again. After five failed attempts, it generates a permanent alarm requiring manual reset.

Solution: Check suction piping, valve glands, lid gasket, and water level. Ensure skimmer is not drawing air.

Overheat

If the drive temperature exceeds 54.4°C (130°F), the pump slowly reduces speed until the over-temperature condition clears.

Solution: Increase ventilation, reduce ambient temperature, and check for loose wiring connections.

Over Current

Indicates the drive is overloaded or the motor has an electrical problem. The drive restarts 20 seconds after the over current condition clears.

Solution: Check for debris in impeller, verify proper voltage, and inspect motor windings.

Over Voltage

Indicates excessive supply voltage or an external water source is causing the pump and motor to rotate, generating excessive voltage on the drive's internal DC bus.

Solution: Check supply voltage and ensure no external water source is rotating the pump when stopped.

Internal Error

The self-monitoring motor control software has encountered an error.

Solution: Clear the alarm and restart. If it persists, contact Pentair Technical Service at 1-800-831-7133.

IntelliFlo Warning Codes

Speed Limit Warning

The pump has reached the maximum allowed speed set in the Min/Max menu. The pump continues running but won't achieve the desired speed.

Solution: Increase the maximum speed setting in the Min/Max menu or check for system restrictions.

Pressure Limit Warning

The pump has reached the maximum system pressure set in the Min/Max menu. The pump continues running but isn't achieving the desired flow rate or speed.

Solution: Check for dirty filter, closed valves, or blocked returns. Adjust max pressure setting if needed.

Flow Limit Warning

The pump has reached the maximum flow rate set in the Min/Max menu. The pump continues running but isn't achieving the desired speed.

Solution: Adjust the Maximum Flow setting in the Min/Max menu.

Common Troubleshooting Scenarios

Pump Won't Prime

  • Check suction piping and valve glands for air leaks
  • Ensure lid gasket is in place and lid is secure
  • Verify water level so skimmer isn't drawing air
  • Make sure suction lines, pump, and strainer are full of water
  • Adjust priming range setting (default is 5)

Reduced Capacity/Head

  • Check for air pockets or leaks in suction line
  • Inspect and clean the impeller
  • Clean pump strainer basket

Pump Not Responding to Automation

  • Verify communication cable is connected at both ends
  • Confirm pump local address matches automation system address
  • Ensure pump has been assigned a circuit name
  • Display should show "DISPLAY NOT ACTIVE" when controlled externally

LCD Display Flickering

This typically indicates a loose drive wiring connection. Check the connection between the drive and keypad and ensure it's tight.
