Pentair IntelliFlo Speed Limit Warning

The Speed Limit warning indicates the pump has reached the maximum allowed speed set in the Min/Max menu. This is a warning, not an alarm - the pump continues to run but won't achieve the desired speed.

This typically occurs when the system demands more flow than the current max speed setting allows.

Understanding Speed Limits

Default Settings

  • Minimum Speed: 450 RPM (adjustable 450-1700 RPM)
  • Maximum Speed: 3450 RPM (adjustable 1900-3450 RPM)

Why Set Speed Limits?

  • Prevent excessive flow through plumbing
  • Comply with local energy codes
  • Reduce noise levels
  • Limit power consumption

Common Causes

Max Speed Set Too Low

  • Previous technician lowered max speed
  • Energy savings setting too aggressive
  • Settings not adjusted after system changes

System Demanding More Flow

  • Flow program requesting speed above max setting
  • Automation requesting higher speed
  • Clean filter reducing system resistance
  • Additional suction lines opened

Adjusting Speed Limits

Via Control Panel

  1. Press Menu button
  2. Use arrows to navigate to Settings
  3. Select Min/Max
  4. Select Set Max Speed
  5. Use arrows to adjust (1900-3450 RPM)
  6. Press Save

Via Automation

If connected to IntelliTouch, EasyTouch, or other automation:

  • Speed limits can also be set through automation
  • Check automation settings if limits seem incorrect
  • Display shows "DISPLAY NOT ACTIVE" when under automation control

Determining Appropriate Max Speed

Flow Requirements

Consider what the system needs:

  • Filtration: 1-2 turnovers per day (lower speeds)
  • Spa jets: Higher flow required
  • Water features: May need higher speeds
  • Pool cleaner: Check cleaner requirements

Piping Limitations

  • 2" piping: typically max 80-100 GPM
  • 1.5" piping: typically max 40-60 GPM
  • Higher speeds may exceed pipe velocity limits

When to Increase Max Speed

  • Spa won't achieve desired jet pressure
  • Water feature flow is inadequate
  • Cleaner not performing well
  • System was recently renovated with larger plumbing

When NOT to Increase Max Speed

  • Plumbing making noise at current speed
  • Equipment showing signs of excessive flow
  • Energy efficiency is priority
  • Local codes limit pump speed
