Pentair Kreepy Krauly Floating to Surface or Getting Stuck

This article covers two separate problems that the Pentair manual treats in its troubleshooting table: the cleaner pulling itself toward the water surface or climbing up the pool wall and surfacing, and the cleaner getting physically trapped on pool hardware like ladder feet or step edges. Both have straightforward manual-specified corrections. Use the relevant section below based on which behavior you are seeing.

Problem A: Cleaner Pulls to the Water Surface or Climbs Out of Pool

The Kreepy Krauly is designed to clean pool floors and walls. The dive float mechanism controls how aggressively the cleaner climbs. When the cleaner climbs too high or reaches the water surface, the dive float settings, ARV installation, water level, and cleaner speed are the four variables to check.

Check the Dive Float Mechanism

The dive float is a buoyant component on the cleaner body with restrictor tabs that limit how high the cleaner can climb. Verify the mechanism operates freely:

  1. Remove the cleaner from the pool
  2. Locate the dive float on the cleaner body and manually move it through its range of motion — it should pivot freely without binding
  3. Clear any debris or chemical scale that may be restricting the float's movement
  4. Check the restrictor tab position:
    • DOWN position: Allows normal wall climbing — cleaner can ascend walls during normal cleaning
    • UP position: Prevents wall climbing — cleaner stays on the pool floor
  5. If the cleaner is climbing out of the pool or reaching the waterline, ensure the restrictor tab is set appropriately for the pool geometry. If the pool does not have walls the cleaner should climb, set the tab to UP.

Check the Automatic Regulator Valve (ARV)

The ARV (P/N K12004) installs in the skimmer compression adapter (P/N K12079) and regulates suction to the cleaner. An improperly installed or clogged ARV can cause the cleaner to receive excessive suction, causing it to climb aggressively and surface.

  1. Locate the ARV in the skimmer — it sits inside the compression adapter at the bottom of the skimmer basket chamber
  2. Remove the ARV and inspect for debris or mineral buildup — rinse clean
  3. Verify the ARV is fully seated in the compression adapter in the correct orientation — an inverted or misaligned ARV will not regulate properly
  4. Reinstall and test

Check the Water Level

The Pentair manual states the water level must be at least 3 inches below the pool deck. If the water level is too high (close to the deck), the cleaner has less vertical distance to travel before reaching the surface, and a normally climbing cleaner may appear to surface when in fact the water level is the issue.

  • Measure from the top of the pool deck to the water surface — there must be at least 3 inches of clearance
  • If the water level is too high, reduce it by backwashing the filter or draining the appropriate amount of water

Verify Operating Speed

The cleaner should move at 8–12 feet per minute. A cleaner operating too fast has more upward momentum and is more likely to climb aggressively. If speed is too high, check whether the suction valve is set to full open and whether the ARV is regulating correctly.

Problem B: Cleaner Gets Stuck on Ladders, Steps, or Ledges

The Kreepy Krauly is not designed to navigate over raised pool hardware. Ladder feet, step ledges, swimout edges, and similar in-pool obstructions can trap the cleaner body or hose and prevent it from continuing.

Install the Ladder Guard Accessory

The Pentair manual specifies the Ladder Guard (P/N K12330) as the solution for entrapment on ladders. The Ladder Guard is a deflector that installs on the pool ladder to redirect the cleaner around the ladder feet rather than allowing it to drive into them and become lodged.

  • Order Ladder Guard P/N K12330 from your Pentair parts supplier
  • Install per the Ladder Guard instructions — the guard mounts to the ladder frame at pool floor level and creates a ramp that guides the cleaner hose and body around the ladder
Note on Steps and Swimouts: The Kreepy Krauly is designed for pool floor and wall cleaning only. It is not designed to clean steps or swimouts. If the cleaner is consistently attempting to climb onto steps or ledges and becoming stuck, verify the dive float restrictor tab is in the UP position to reduce climbing tendency, and check the ARV and eyeball diverter settings.
