Pentair WhisperFlo VST Fault 0b — AC Voltage Maximum Exceeded
Fault 0b (also displayed as "Ob") on the WhisperFlo VST indicates the supply voltage is exceeding the pump's 251V maximum operating limit. The drive shuts down to protect its electronics from damage caused by overvoltage conditions.
This fault is less common than the AC under voltage fault (0F) but should be taken seriously — sustained overvoltage can cause permanent damage to the drive electronics.
What Causes Fault 0b?
High Utility Voltage
Some utility services deliver voltage at the upper end of tolerance ranges. If the nominal supply is already near 240V and the utility runs high, the pump can see voltages above 251V.
Voltage Spikes and Surges

- Large loads switching off nearby (motors, HVAC equipment) can create brief voltage spikes
- Utility switching operations
Wiring Issues
- Open neutral on a 240V circuit — if the neutral is broken or loose on a split-phase system, one leg can rise significantly above nominal voltage
- Improper voltage tap at the utility transformer
Troubleshooting Steps
Step 1: Power Cycle
- Turn off breaker
- Wait until all keypad LEDs turn off
- Turn breaker back on and restart
- If fault 0b does not return, the overvoltage event was likely a transient spike
Step 2: Measure Supply Voltage
- Use a multimeter to measure voltage at the motor's terminal block while the pump is running
- Voltage must remain below 251V at all times
- Measure at multiple times of day — utility voltage often varies with neighborhood load
- Also measure at the breaker panel to confirm readings
Step 3: Check Neutral Connections (240V Installations)
An open or loose neutral is a serious wiring hazard. If you suspect a neutral issue:
- Check for voltage imbalance between the two legs at the pump terminal block
- A significantly unequal reading between legs while the pump is running can indicate a neutral problem
- Do not operate the pump — call a licensed electrician immediately if a neutral fault is suspected
Step 4: Install Surge Protection
If voltage spikes are causing intermittent Fault 0b occurrences, a whole-home or panel-mounted surge protector can help filter transient events before they reach the pump drive.
