Pentair IntelliFlo Flow Limit Warning

The Flow Limit warning indicates the pump has reached the maximum flow rate set in the Min/Max menu. The pump continues to run but isn't achieving the desired speed because it's limiting flow.

This feature must be enabled in the Min/Max menu to be active during speed programs.

Pentair IntelliFlo Flow Limit Warning

Understanding Flow Limits

Default Settings

  • Minimum Flow: 20 GPM (adjustable 20-70 GPM)
  • Maximum Flow: 140 GPM (adjustable 80-140 GPM)
  • Flow Limit Speed: Disabled by default

Why Flow Limiting Matters

  • Protects plumbing from excessive velocity
  • Prevents cavitation at suction
  • Reduces noise from high-velocity flow
  • Ensures equipment operates within specifications

Common Causes of Flow Limit Warning

Max Flow Set Too Low

  • Previous configuration with smaller plumbing
  • Energy efficiency settings too aggressive
  • Settings not adjusted after system upgrade

System Changes

  • Recently cleaned filter (less restriction)
  • Plumbing upgrades to larger pipe
  • Suction lines opened that were closed
  • Return valves opened wider

Speed Program Requesting Too Much

  • Program speed results in flow above limit
  • Automation requesting high speed
  • Multiple suction sources reducing head

Adjusting Flow Limits

Changing Max Flow

  1. Press Menu button
  2. Navigate to Settings > Min/Max
  3. Select Set Max Flow
  4. Adjust to desired value (80-140 GPM)
  5. Press Save

Enabling Flow Limit for Speed Programs

  1. Press Menu button
  2. Navigate to Settings > Min/Max
  3. Select Flow Limit Speed
  4. Set to Enabled (default is Disabled)
  5. Press Save

Flow vs. Pipe Size

Recommended Maximum Flow Rates

Pipe SizeMax GPM (Suction)Max GPM (Discharge)
1.5"45 GPM60 GPM
2"80 GPM100 GPM
2.5"125 GPM150 GPM
3"180 GPM220 GPM

Exceeding these rates causes:

  • Excessive noise
  • Pipe erosion over time
  • Cavitation at suction
  • Energy waste

When to Increase Max Flow

  • Large plumbing system (2.5" or 3")
  • Commercial application
  • Multiple return lines
  • System designed for high flow

When NOT to Increase

  • 1.5" suction line (keep under 45 GPM)
  • Plumbing making noise at current flow
  • Air bubbles visible in pump basket
  • Suction showing cavitation signs

Flow Mode vs. Speed Mode

Flow Mode (Constant GPM)

Pump adjusts speed to maintain set flow rate:

  • Automatically compensates for filter pressure
  • Maintains consistent turnover
  • Better for filtration programs

Speed Mode (Constant RPM)

Pump runs at set speed regardless of flow:

  • Traditional fixed-speed behavior
  • Flow varies with system conditions
  • Better for water features with specific speed needs

Determining Proper Flow Rate

For Filtration

Calculate based on pool volume:

  • 1 turnover = pool gallons / 480 (for 8-hour turnover)
  • Example: 20,000 gallons / 480 = 42 GPM

For Equipment

  • Check heater minimum flow requirement
  • Verify chlorinator flow requirements
  • Ensure minimum flow for solar panels
