Pentair IntelliFlo Priming Failure

The priming failure alarm is one of the most common issues on Pentair IntelliFlo variable speed pumps. This alarm indicates the pump couldn't establish proper water flow within the configured priming duration.

If the pump cannot prime within five attempts, it generates a permanent alarm that must be manually reset by pressing the Reset button.

What Causes Priming Failure?

Air Leaks in Suction Line

The most common cause of priming failure is air entering the suction side of the system. Air can enter through:

  • Cracked or loose pump lid
  • Worn lid o-ring
  • Loose union connections
  • Cracked suction piping
  • Worn valve stem o-rings
  • Loose pipe fittings

Insufficient Water

  • Pool water level below skimmer
  • Suction lines not full of water
  • Empty pump strainer pot
  • Closed suction valves

Clogged Components

  • Clogged pump strainer basket
  • Debris in impeller
  • Blocked skimmer basket
  • Dirty or clogged filter

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting

Step 1: Check Water Level

Ensure pool water level is at least halfway up the skimmer opening. If low, add water before attempting to prime.

Step 2: Inspect Pump Lid and O-Ring

  1. Turn off power to the pump
  2. Remove pump lid
  3. Inspect o-ring for cracks, flat spots, or debris
  4. Clean and lubricate o-ring with silicone lubricant
  5. Check lid for cracks
  6. Reinstall and ensure proper seal

Step 3: Fill Pump with Water

  1. Open pump lid
  2. Fill strainer pot completely with water
  3. Replace lid quickly
  4. Start pump immediately

Step 4: Check Suction Valves

Verify all suction side valves are fully open. A partially closed valve can prevent proper priming.

Step 5: Inspect for Air Leaks

While pump is running, look for:

  • Air bubbles in pump basket
  • Water spraying from fittings
  • Wet spots on suction piping

Step 6: Adjust Priming Settings

If the pump comes out of priming mode too early or with air still visible:

  1. Press Menu button
  2. Navigate to Priming
  3. Adjust Priming Range (default is 5)
  4. Higher number = longer priming time
  5. Increase Max Priming Duration if needed (default is 11 minutes)

When to Replace Components

  • Lid O-ring: If cracked, flattened, or doesn't seal after lubrication
  • Pump Lid: If cracked or warped
  • Mechanical Seal: If pump is leaking between motor and volute
  • Suction Piping: If cracks are found in underground or exposed pipes

Preventing Future Priming Issues

  • Maintain proper water level
  • Regularly inspect and lubricate o-rings
  • Keep strainer basket clean
  • Check for air leaks during routine service visits
  • Enable "Loss of Prime" feature for automatic recovery
