Pentair IntelliFlo3 VSF Over Current Alarm

The over current alarm on the Pentair IntelliFlo3 VSF indicates the load on the motor has increased beyond normal operating limits. When this alarm triggers, the drive's ON/STOP LED blinks RED and the pump stops. The pump will automatically attempt to restart after 1 minute.

What Causes Over Current?

According to the manual, load has increased on the motor due to one or more of the following causes:

  • Debris: Foreign matter in the pump volute or impeller passages increasing hydraulic resistance
  • Part interference: A rotating component making contact with a stationary part
  • Temperature: Changes in water or ambient temperature affecting fluid viscosity or component clearances
  • Age of parts: Worn or degraded internal components requiring more power to operate
  • Supplied voltage: Voltage supply issues causing the drive to draw more current

Corrective Action from the Manual

The manual directs you to disassemble the pump and inspect the rotating parts for blockages or debris buildup. Refer to the Disassembly and Reassembly sections of the manual for instructions.

Inspecting for Debris

A clogged impeller or debris in the strainer basket are the most common field-serviceable causes of over current. Start with the easiest checks:

  1. Turn off power to the pump at the circuit breaker and disconnect the communication cable
  2. Clean the pump strainer basket — refer to the Cleaning the Pump Strainer Basket section of the manual
  3. Inspect the fan guard and use compressed air to remove any dirt, debris, or blockages (a blocked fan can accompany over current)
  4. If the over current persists, disassemble the pump and inspect the impeller and rotating parts for blockages or debris buildup

Automatic Restart

The pump will automatically attempt to restart after 1 minute. If the over current condition persists, the pump will fault again. Repeated faulting without an identifiable cause may indicate worn internal components or a voltage supply problem requiring a licensed electrician.
