Pentair Prowler 910 Cable Twisting or Coiling Up
A tangled or coiled communication cable is one of the most common complaints with the Prowler 910. The 40-foot cable attaches to the cleaner at the rear and runs back to the power supply on the pool deck. When the cleaner spins in place — whether due to an obstruction, a stuck main drain cover, or too much slack — it winds the cable around itself with each revolution. The Prowler 910 manual (P/N 360321) identifies three specific causes and a fix for each.
Cause 1: Obstruction in the Pool
Steps, pool toys, hoses, or debris on the pool floor can redirect the cleaner repeatedly in the same direction. Each time the cleaner bumps into the obstruction and tries to navigate around it, it may spin multiple times, winding the cable incrementally with each pass.
Fix
- Turn off and unplug the power supply
- Remove the cleaner from the pool using the handle
- Clear all obstructions from the pool floor: steps leading into the pool, toys, vacuum hoses, lane lines, or any other objects the cleaner can drive into
- Uncoil and straighten the cable before returning the cleaner to the pool
- Restart the cleaning cycle
The Prowler 910 is designed for aboveground pools and navigates by contact — it cannot detect and avoid obstacles in advance. A clear pool floor is essential for straight tracking and an untangled cable.
Cause 2: Cleaner Getting Stuck on the Main Drain Cover
If the cleaner drives over the main drain cover and the suction pulls it down, the cleaner can get stuck in place and spin continuously trying to free itself. Each revolution winds the cable tighter. This is a particularly common cause because the cleaner passes over the main drain repeatedly during the cleaning cycle.
Fix
- Install a main drain cover ring — this elevates the cover slightly so the cleaner can ride over it without being suctioned down
- After each use, remove the cable from the pool and lay it out straight in direct sunlight for 15–30 minutes; heat relaxes the coil memory in the cable jacket so it uncoils flat for the next use
- Before each cleaning cycle, hold the cable at the midpoint and let it hang freely to confirm there is no residual twist before placing the cleaner in the pool
Cause 3: Excess Cable in the Pool
The Prowler 910 comes with a 40-foot cable, which is more than enough for most aboveground pools. If the full cable length is fed into the pool on a smaller pool, the slack loops on the pool floor. The cleaner can drive over these loops, picking up the cable under its tracks, which then wraps around the cleaner body as it moves.
Fix
- Measure the longest diagonal of your pool
- Feed only as much cable into the pool as needed to reach the far end — pull the rest back out and drape it over the edge near the power supply
- The power supply must remain on dry ground at least 6 feet from the pool edge; position it near the center of the longest pool wall so the cable enters the pool at the midpoint and the cleaner has equal reach to both ends
