Pentair Prowler 910 Robotic Pool Cleaner Guide: Setup, Maintenance, and Troubleshooting
The Pentair Prowler 910 (P/N 360321) is a robotic aboveground pool cleaner that scrubs, vacuums, and filters on its own power. It requires no connection to the pool's pump or filter system — a self-contained power supply drives the unit. This guide covers initial setup, starting a cleaning cycle, removing the cleaner from the pool, cleaning the filter basket, clearing the impeller, proper storage, and troubleshooting.
Cleaner Overview
The Prowler 910 includes the robotic cleaner unit and a 40-foot floating cable connected to a power supply. It is designed for aboveground pools and cleans by scrubbing the pool floor. A full cleaning cycle lasts approximately 1.5 hours, after which the cleaner stops automatically. Ideal water temperature range: 43–95°F (6–35°C).
Initial Setup
- Position the power supply at least 12 feet (3.5 m) from the pool edge.
- Unroll the floating cable completely and stretch it out so there are no kinks.
- Connect the cable to the power supply — align the notch on the connector with the groove on the power supply socket, then turn clockwise to lock.
- Connect the power supply to a GFCI outlet.
Placing the Cleaner in the Pool
- Confirm the power supply is OFF and positioned at least 12 feet from the pool.
- Lower the cleaner into the pool by its handle.
- Gently tilt the cleaner from side to side, or turn it upside down, to release trapped air. The cleaner should sink flat to the pool floor.
- Once resting flat on the bottom, press the On/Off button on the power supply to begin a cleaning cycle.
Removing the Cleaner from the Pool
- Disconnect the power supply cable from the electrical outlet.
- Using the floating cable, slowly and gently pull the cleaner to the waterline at the edge of the pool until you can reach the handle.
- Lift the cleaner out of the pool by the handle.
- Place the cleaner on the pool edge and allow excess water to drain from the cleaner body and basket.
- Disconnect the floating cable from the power supply.
- Store the cleaner in a covered area with the cable coiled.
Cleaning the Filter Basket
Clean the filter basket after every cleaning cycle. Excessive debris in the basket restricts suction and reduces cleaning effectiveness.
- Ensure the power supply is OFF and disconnected.
- Press the latch to open the filter cover and remove the basket.
- Empty the basket and thoroughly rinse it with a garden hose.
- Reinstall the basket and close the filter cover.
Cleaning the Impeller
Debris can become lodged in the impeller and reduce or stop motor function. To clear it:
- Disconnect power and remove the cleaner from the pool.
- Open the filter cover and remove the basket.
- By hand, remove as much debris as possible from the impeller opening.
- If debris is lodged deeper, remove the impeller cover: use a No. 2 Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the two screws in the bottom corners of the impeller cover.
- Gently pull the impeller cover away from the cleaner body.
- Remove any remaining debris from around the impeller.
- Remount the impeller cover and tighten both screws.
Storage
When the cleaner will not be used for an extended period (such as during winter):
- Disconnect and store the power supply.
- Coil the floating cable.
- Drain all water from the cleaner body.
- Thoroughly clean the filter basket and reinstall it.
- Store the cleaner in a covered area protected from direct sun, rain, and frost. Storage temperature: 41–113°F (5–45°C).
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Corrective Action |
|---|---|---|
| Cable twisting or coiling up | Obstruction in pool | Remove the obstruction. |
| Cleaner snagging on main drain cover | Turn off the pool filter pump and install a main drain cover ring. Straighten the cable and lay it in the sun periodically to relax kinks. | |
| Excess cable in pool | Remove excess cable from the water. | |
| Cleaner moving in circles | Dirt stuck in moving parts | Remove debris from tracks and wheels. |
| Worn tracks | Replace tracks (P/N 360342). | |
| Power supply positioned incorrectly | Reposition the power supply so the cable allows the cleaner to reach all pool walls. | |
| Bottom lid mounted incorrectly | Ensure the bottom lid is locked in the correct position. | |
| Algae on pool floor | Correct pool water conditions and brush the floor before running the cleaner. | |
| Cleaner does not reach all pool areas | Power supply positioned incorrectly | Reposition the power supply. |
| Algae on pool floor | Brush the pool floor. | |
| Pool filter and pump running | Turn off the pool filter and pump, then run another cleaning cycle. | |
| Motor not working | Impeller blocked | Remove the impeller tube and clean the impeller per the procedure above. |
| Drive system blocked | Clean tracks and wheels. | |
| Electrical problem | Consult dealer or service center. May require replacement of motor unit (P/N 360341), floating cable (P/N 360343), or power supply (P/N 360337). | |
| Cleaner will not sink | Trapped air in cleaner | Turn the cleaner upside down underwater to release trapped air. Wash the filter basket. Remove calcium deposits or other chemical buildup. Open the inlet flap in the bottom lid to release trapped air. |
| Power supply or indicator light not working | Not plugged in or outlet damaged | Reconnect and check the main power outlet. |
