Pentair Rebel V2 Suction-Side Cleaner Guide: Installation, Flow Adjustment, and Troubleshooting

The Pentair Rebel V2 is a suction-side pool cleaner that connects to the pool's skimmer or dedicated vacuum line. Designed for in-ground pools, the Rebel V2 includes a flow gauge and adjustable regulator valve for precise flow control, and a turbine-driven mechanism that provides wall-climbing capability. This guide covers installation, flow adjustment, hose length, eyeball diverter setup, turbine maintenance, tire replacement, and troubleshooting.

Pentair Rebel V2 Cleaner Guide

Cleaner Overview

The Rebel V2 is a suction-side cleaner powered by the pool's pump. It includes a built-in flow gauge and regulator valve for tuning performance. The cleaner operates at 16–18 RPM for optimal cleaning and moves at approximately 27–32 feet per minute across the pool floor. Expected pool cleaning time: 4–6 hours. Not designed to clean steps, swimouts, or under a solar cover.

Safety: Do not allow swimmers in the pool while the cleaner is operating — the hose can trip or entangle swimmers. Stop the pump before servicing the cleaner. Moving parts can injure hands or fingers.
Dedicated suction port (vac port): If your pool has a dedicated vacuum port, it must be covered when not in use. Install the included spring-loaded vac port safety cover (conforming to IAPMO SPS4-99A) whenever the cleaner is disconnected.

Pool Preparation

  1. Chemically balance the pool water.
  2. Brush the pool and allow debris to settle.
  3. Hand vacuum thoroughly.
  4. Clean the filter and pump strainer basket.
  5. Repair loose tiles or tighten any loose light rings (gunite or tiled pools).
  6. Inspect vinyl liner for signs of deterioration — repair before installing the cleaner.

Hose Assembly

  1. Wet hose ends in pool water, then twist and push female ends onto male ends until snug.
  2. Connect the leader hose to the cleaner swivel. Note: The leader hose is 21 inches (53.3 cm) and shorter than the other sections — it is also marked with a red sticker. Always use the leader hose; omitting it will reduce cleaner performance.
  3. Install the hose float on the second hose section, positioned 25 inches (63.5 cm) above the cleaner.
  4. Total hose length should reach from the connection point to the farthest point in the pool, plus one section and the leader hose.

Installation

Standard Skimmer Installation (Recommended)

  1. Turn the pool pump off.
  2. Close the main drain and all suction lines except the skimmer to which the cleaner will connect.
  3. Remove the skimmer basket.
  4. Thread the compression adapter into the vacuum connection in the bottom of the skimmer (use two wraps of thread seal tape).
  5. Press the regulator valve into the compression adapter with the adjustment knob pointing up.
  6. Place the cleaner into the pool and rock it side to side to release trapped air. Allow it to sink to the floor. Feed the hose vertically down until fully filled with water.
  7. Slide the hose protector onto the hose at the skimmer opening to prevent wall abrasion.
  8. Insert the hose through the skimmer opening and connect to the regulator valve.
  9. Turn on the pump. Adjust flow using the flow gauge (see below).

Optional Vacuum Line Installation

Install the regulator valve in the skimmer (not at the wall) when using a dedicated vacuum line, then use the valve cap to ensure proper 28 GPM flow through the line:

  1. Turn the pump off. Close all suction lines except the skimmer and the vacuum line.
  2. Thread the vacuum line wall fitting (P/N GW9530) into the end of the dedicated vacuum line (use thread seal tape).
  3. Place the cleaner in the pool and feed hose down until full of water.
  4. Insert the male hose end of the last hose section directly into the vacuum line wall fitting.
  5. In the skimmer: thread the compression adapter into the vacuum connection. Press the regulator valve into the adapter. Attach the valve cap to the top of the regulator valve — this is required to activate the valve and ensure 28 GPM flows through the vacuum line.
  6. Turn on the pump and allow a few minutes for air to clear.

Adjusting Flow with the Flow Gauge

The flow gauge provides a precise way to set the regulator valve to the correct flow rate:

  1. Turn the pump off.
  2. Disconnect the cleaner from the leader hose and connect the flow gauge in its place. Keep the hose submerged to prevent pulling air.
  3. Turn the pump on.
  4. Adjust the regulator valve knob: clockwise to increase flow, counterclockwise to decrease. Target: the disc indicator settles between "Maximum" and "Minimum" on the gauge.
  5. Turn the pump off, remove the flow gauge, and reconnect the cleaner.
  6. Lower the cleaner to the pool floor and turn the pump on.

Calculating Cleaner RPM Without the Flow Gauge

If the flow gauge is unavailable:

  1. With the pump running, lift the cleaner just below the water surface while keeping it submerged.
  2. Count the number of full wheel rotations per minute (count how many times the wheel hump passes the swivel assembly). Target: 16–18 RPM.
  3. If below 16 RPM: turn the regulator valve knob clockwise to increase flow. Recheck.
  4. If above 18 RPM: turn the regulator valve knob counterclockwise to decrease flow. Recheck.

Hose Length Adjustment

Check with the pump running (the hose contracts under suction). Position the cleaner at the farthest point of the pool. The hose should reach that point plus one additional section and the leader hose. Remove excess sections from the middle of the assembly to preserve the hose float position. Save removed sections as spares.

Return Line Water Flow and Eyeball Diverter

Return line flow can push the hose and cause the cleaner to remain in one pool area. Use the included eyeball diverter to redirect flow:

  1. Turn the pump off.
  2. Remove the existing eyeball from the return fitting by unscrewing the lock ring.
  3. Install the Rebel V2 eyeball diverter (P/N 41201-0236) with the opening in the desired direction. Tighten the lock ring.

Effective positions: directed along the tile line, directed downward, or directed against the hose to steer the cleaner away from steps and ladders. An optional wire diverter (P/N K121620) is available if the eyeball diverter does not fit.

Maintenance

Removing Debris from the Turbine

If the right side wheel will not rotate by hand with the pump off, there is an obstruction in the turbine:

  1. Turn the pump off. Remove the cleaner from the pool and disconnect it from the leader hose.
  2. Place the cleaner on a flat work surface. Open the buckle on the front of the cleaner by pulling it out and down. Lift the front of the top cover and pull it forward to separate it from the body. Lift the cover straight up.
  3. Pull the turbine cover straight up and off the cleaner body.
  4. Remove any visible obstructions from the turbine and turbine cover.
  5. Replace the turbine cover with the swivel assembly oriented toward the front of the cleaner.
  6. Visually inspect gears, drive shafts, and swivel assembly. Remove any debris.
  7. Test by turning the right wheel — it should rotate smoothly.
  8. Place the top cover over the swivel assembly. Seat the tabs on the back side of the cover into the slots on the back side of the cleaner body, then let the front of the cover fall into place.
  9. Lock the top cover with the front buckle.

Tire Inspection and Replacement

Inspect tires periodically. Replace when the outer surface has worn to the bottom of the tire's grooves — worn tires prevent the cleaner from climbing pool walls.

To remove the tire: Place the cleaner on a flat surface. Fold the tire off the wheel from top to bottom by hand — do not use tools, as they may damage the wheel.

To install the replacement tire: Seat the top of the tire onto the top of the wheel by hand. Stretch the bottom of the tire over the bottom of the wheel. Fold the back lip of the tire along the full circumference of the wheel — the tire should lie flat on the top surface.

Storage note: Store the hose flat (not coiled) to prevent kinks. Leave the cleaner in the pool between uses except during chemical shock treatments.

Troubleshooting

ProblemCorrective Action
Cleaner not moving or moving too slowly Use the flow gauge or RPM check to verify flow and adjust the regulator valve. Check for debris inside the cleaner (turbine obstruction). Confirm the pump has primed and there are no suction leaks. Backwash the filter if flow is restricted. Confirm all suction lines except the cleaner's line are closed. Check for debris in the filter, pump basket, or impeller.
Right wheel will not turn by hand There is a turbine obstruction — clean the turbine per the procedure above.
Cleaner stays in one end of the pool Adjust flow with the regulator valve. Redirect return line flow with the eyeball diverter. Confirm hose reaches the farthest pool point. Check hose float placement (should be 25 in. above cleaner). Confirm the swivel assembly rotates smoothly — clean if dirty.
Cleaner climbs the wall too much or climbs out Reduce flow using the regulator valve.
Cleaner won't climb the pool walls Check tires for excessive wear — replace if worn to the grooves. Increase flow using the regulator valve. Confirm the leader hose is installed in the correct position. Check hose float placement.
Cleaner stays on the main drain Confirm the main drain valve is fully closed. Confirm a main drain grate is installed.
Cleaner falls on its side and takes too long to recover Check hose float placement. Confirm the leader hose is installed and in the correct position. Confirm hose length is correct. Check whether the return eyeball fittings are pushing the hose and repositioning them if needed.
